Create affordable, on-demand office space for small businesses

Create affordable, small, on-demand shared offices within the current historic structures for startups, entrepreneurs creatives, or other small businesses, that can be rented on short-term leases like in larger cities. These types of shared work environments are affordable for small businesses, promote collaboration and foster the exchange of ideas. By growing the workforce downtown, we'll increase foot traffic during the day and offer affordable brick-and-mortar options for small business owners and creatives.

  1. I think that type of business would need to get a re-zoning approval, which would open the area to something other than residential. I wonder if this would defeat the purpose of preserving the character of the neighborhood? Just a thought.

I was thinking about the Regions building or old Heritage Club for this purpose, not the other structures in the neighborhoods. Increased workforce in the core of downtown leads to greater foot traffic and would be followed by additional retail and dining options.

  2. I've seen something like this done in the Woodlawn community near Birmingham. There is a non-profit there that helps start-up businesses "incubate" in one of the local historic buildings. They had restaurants, hair salons, local art galleries...it was a really interesting idea that seemed to be rejuvenating a somewhat blighted neighborhood.

  3. This would be a great way to make income-generating space out of the empty second floors of many downtown buildings. Great way to attract younger professionals downtown to develop their businesses.

  4. Like an incubator for small web based start ups. All you need good internet access, work, collaboration areas, parking. Space can be leased short, mid term. Also some space for stand alone web professionals, developers, programmers who work from home or book stores.
