Entertainment District like Austin Texas

A few years ago the HSV chamber visited Austin Texas to get ideas about what to do on HSV. Recall this visit and the 4th 6th street areas, lots great restaurants, places where bands can play, entertainment, stores, etc... and block off the street on the weekend and have festivals there as well. Austin does it up right

The city is in the process of creating two entertainment districts within the downtown area. The current proposal would allow the district to be open at specific times twice a week and also on an event basis. One of the goals of creating the districts is to stimulate economic development by encouraging additional restaurants and retail activity. Also, as you say, creating that vibrant, fun atmosphere that make you want to get out and enjoy the downtown.

  2. Like Austin, outdoor dining/bar venues are key. The Huntsville climate would support extended season opportunities for this.

Yes, the outdoor patio's are awesome, even roof tops like the Iron Catcus. lived in Austin 8 years and loved the entertainment / parks in the downtown areas.... the weekend festivals brought street vendor's out to the public so Lowes Mill artist could setup booths and have our local talented musicians play

I think this is a great point, and gets at a broader issue: Are we thinking about improvements as a way to attract tourists, or are we thinking about them as things that we would want to make our own city more liveable for residents? I'd suggest that in focusing on the latter, and in building upon our existing assets - a unique historic downtown, a large in-town park, an active convention center - we can improve our own quality of life, and make Huntsville a place that people not only want to visit, but that they'd want to live...

  5. It sounds like a wonderful idea i've lived in many major metropolitan areas in my life and an entertainment district always brings more activity to the downtown areas. Sacramento does a good job with this as does Austin as previously mentioned.
