Extend the Big Spring walkway

The lovely recreational walkway alongside Big Spring extends from downtown but abruptly ends at Heart of Huntsville. If that walkway could be extended to Memorial and small shops permitted along the route, it could connect to Huntsville Hospital and the new hotel, offering more walkability for downtown residents and workers as well as shopping/food options during downtown events.

Having worked on the greenway plans since the city's first project, I am encouraged by all the supportive comments. All your ideas are spot on regarding the extensions and connectivity. The path that ends at Heart of Huntsville is projected to connect with a greenway along Pinhook Creek and Huntsville Spring Branch. This connection will lead you both south through Brahan Spring Park and ultimately to the Tennessee River and north connecting with an abandoned railroad corridor leading to Alabama A & M University.

  2. Good idea. However, I'm not sure I'd want to walk in the area near the hospital. It can get seedy in a hurry.

  3. That is a good point. However many cities have shown if you create areas that attract activity, it improves the area and diminishes crime/negative interactions

  4. I whole heartily agree with this idea. But don't stop at the hospital. Extend the trail all the way south to Ditto Landing.

  5. The trail could extend all along Redstone Arsenals East border which the city owns quite a bit of land on.
