Instead of vainly trying to squeeze more parking inside downtown we should be building perimeter parking combined with ready access to free shuttles and safe pedestrian walkways. The was the solution I have seen in other older growing towns that were laid out in the pre-automobile era. An counter-intuitively, I never encountered anyone living in those places complaining about walking from the perimeter parking to their destinations. Once done some of the aging interior parking areas could be re-purposed to something much more valuable to the community.
