Turn the old General Shale location into a Farmer's Market.

I go to the Chattanooga Farmer's Market. It is in an old warehouse and open only on Sundays. I've been trying to figure out a good venue for something similar in Huntsville. There could not be a better one. Plenty of parking and lots of area under roof. I noticed a rental sign that was lying on the ground next to the office. This should be brought up before the City Council. They want to emulate Chattanooga's success. This would do part of that.

Many of you may not be aware of a brick sculpture in Huntsville that has graced the front of the old General Shale company building on South Parkway since 1988. It depicts our involvement in Space history and focuses mainly on the Spacelab era, during which it was created. The office building that contains the sculpture is empty now along with the adjacent brick warehouse buildings. I think it is a real shame that this bit of history has been abandoned and forgotten. The brick that was used for most of the houses in Huntsville was created here from Alabama Red Clay that was dug up in the area around the bridge that crossed the Tennessee River close to the defunct General Shale Plant. I did a Google search and found that the sculptor, Johnny Hagerman is still active with this kind of sculpting and still works with General Shale at other facilities.

  2. I think that the city at a minimium should purchase the brick fascade at the old General Shale Company since it is a beautiful depiction of huntsville space history. It could be moved to Big spring and put on a monument there or some other location ie Early works Space and Rocket Center etc..

I would be afraid to try to move the facade because it could damage it. I would rather see the original artist be commissioned to produce another work updated to showcase Huntsville now.

  4. A shaded space for a really good Farmer's Market would be fantastic! I sometimes don't go to the Greene Street Thursday market because of the heat, and it did get rained out a lot last year.
