Urban Chickens

Let us raise some backyard chickens, already. I've been monitoring the activity on this issue and see that there are ordinance proposals to allow most lots to raise 3-6 chickens. Let's do it, already. I would love to raise a couple chickens as educational tools for my kids and for the eggs.

Every argument I've heard against the idea is bunk. They don't smell, make noise, or devalue property.

  1. I don't have a problem with the proposals because I think they all ban having roosters in city limits. I'm not trying to get anyone in trouble here, but someone across the street from me (perhaps illegally?) has a chicken and a rooster that this person got for their birthday as baby chicks. I will tell you, the rooster does not stop crowing. It doesn't bother me since it doesn't wake me up or keep me from falling asleep and I get a kick out of it when I'm out working in the yard. It makes me feel like I'm out on a farm. But I could see how maybe their neighbors might have issue with it if it wakes them up. But anyway, it's probably a moot point since the proposals ban roosters but as far as noise goes, they are pretty noisy.

Yeah, the current ordinance bans roosters and the proposed amendment doesn't change that. My statement was in regards to hens. They're very quite. Barking dogs are much noisier and more annoying.... and smellier... and only lay things that aren't useful.

  3. Its a cultural thing. Not that many years ago we had cows, chickens and goats (and barns) in Twickenham and Five Points. Over time, it became a matter of status to make the city less "farm-like". Personally, I'm glad no pigs are nearby! However, today, raising prize exotic chickens is allowed again in most modern cities. It will happen here in time.
