Real time bus tracking on Huntsville's shuttle system

http://fortune.com/2016/01/11/uber-transloc-public-transit/

Make it easier to see where buses are in near real-time giving riders a better sense of how long they will have to wait for a bus and the ability to plan trips better.

Citizen advocacy group for transit, bicycles and pedestrians.

In my opinion our region, Huntsville Metro needs to have a strong citizen transportation advocacy organization. There have been several pro-transit, biking and pedestrian posts on this idea forum. But we all come across as individual suggestions. Imagine if we got together and formed a group that could have coordinated messaging, events and actionable options. We could help to do research into new technology for transit ...more »

Dangerous Jaywalking

The unofficial smoking section at the Huntsville Hospital entrance on Gallatin at Sivley needs to be redirected to another place. There is only one tiny spot for people to crowd around right next to the road. I drive through there every day and DAILY someone jaywalks in front of me. I have even seen someone in a hospital gown sitting on the sidewalk there with her feet out in the road. Because of Twickenham Square ...more »

CROSSWALK on BOB WALLACE ACROSS WHITESBURG

FOR over 8 years I have begged the city and my councilman Bill Kling for a crosswalk here. The city painted a crosswalk on Bob Wallace across California but never continued it across Whitesburg. This is just down the street from Huntsville High School. My entire neighborhood can not get across our intersection to walk/bike safely to HHS, local businesses, or our park. How hard is it to paint two white lines on pavement? ...more »

Revitalize 5 Points and Oakwood Rd

I believe 5 Points and Oakwood Rd down to the Parkway would be a great area to revitalize. It would make a great area for walking, bike paths etc. Also it would be a great addition to downtown. If this area was undeveloped? Imagine the

possibilities?

Bike Lanes

Create bike lanes and shared lanes. Promote biking and safety with marketing and advertising materials. Connect the park system using bike trails and lanes.

Things that can be done today at low or no cost:

1. Planning staff can create maps showing bike routes from landmarks and parks to other landmarks and parks. Give them to the public.

2. Organize bike events.

3. Educate the public on biking through workshops.

Improving the Holmes Avenue corridor

Recent news articles discussed the desire of city planners to improve the Holmes Avenue corridor, strengthening the ties between downtown Huntsville and Research Park. Consider using this as a showcase for bike path and / or bike lane development, drawing on examples from Northern Virginia and other areas. Start in Research Park and put bicycle-friendly lanes or paths on Bradford, across the Research Park Blvd overpass, ...more »

Gus Mayer HSV

Gus Mayer is an excellent high-end designer large-scale boutique/small department store based out of Birmingham. It is just the right size that Huntsville can support. Their service is much more helpful than traditional luxury department stores and their costs are very competitive. This is really a perfect fit that would keep tax revenue in Huntsville, rather than Nashville, or Birmingham

Shift money from new road projects to alternative transportation

I've seen many new road projects in the works cited as congestion mitigation and efforts to preserve our short travel time. However, as good as this sounds new roads and expansion just attracts new car trips to add still more cars to the network. This article describes this concept of "induced demand" and how it is now a major item of consideration in the California DOT's decision making process:http://www.citylab.com/commute/2015/11/californias-dot-admits-that-more-roads-mean-more-traffic/415245/?utm_source=nl__link6_111315 ...more »

Contiguous neighborhood planning units.

As part of the Big Picture comprehensive plan, it would be great to see the city's vision for a contiguous network of neighborhoods. Many neighborhoods have natural boundaries and in many cases a sense of place. Neighborhoods should be small enough to be walkable, and should some place that serves as a node or a hub, be it for transit or small scale neighborhood commercial.

Madison county railroad repurposing

Is there to take the current railroad lines downtown and start a trolley or something? Maybe start at the depot and give some tours of Huntsville using the trolley?

And whatever you do, be sure to leave that old wooden trestle by the embassy suites. It may or may not be historic, but its cool factor is very high!!

Promote Imagine Huntsville

My Big Picture Idea is to get more people in the city on Imagine Huntsville, and talking about ideas. I'm not sure how many people are active on here right now, but imagine if we had just 50 people active, submitting ideas, commenting, tweaking ideas, etc. This forum could really go places.

All that to say, do y'all have any ideas for promoting the site?

Place making artwork for new city center developments

Huntsville needs to utilize its great local artist base to integrate locally-themed sculptures, mosaics, fountains, murals, etc. into the new downtown developments. Otherwise, as places they will just be newly designed strip malls, only as endearing a landmark as the novelty that will wear out before they are paid for. Great cities have great art that serves as landmarks (not generic landmarks like, Publix or the latest ...more »

Revitalize Downtown Museums

As the boom continues in downtown construction, we do not need to forget the focus on some of the core attractions that drive tourism and dollars to the area. The Historic Huntsville Depot is ideally located between new parks and close to the Avenue development. Let's make sure that this destination remains open to the public. The grounds are neglected and need to be refurbished. This would be a great venue for multiple ...more »

Outdoor Business Park

Create an park for business professionals (or really anyone) to be able to work outside instead of being cramped up in and office/cubicle all day. Can use solar panels to provide power for lighting and receptacles to plug laptops/chargers into. Could provide wifi service for charge a small fee ($1-$5), or even a monthly membership.
