Perimeter parking for downtown Huntsville

Instead of vainly trying to squeeze more parking inside downtown we should be building perimeter parking combined with ready access to free shuttles and safe pedestrian walkways. The was the solution I have seen in other older growing towns that were laid out in the pre-automobile era. An counter-intuitively, I never encountered anyone living in those places complaining about walking from the perimeter parking to their... more »

Why keep Huntsville in the dark ages

I have a simple question why have Huntsville Madison county leadership been so against bringing in really big bold fun exciting things for the folks here to do here. I as well as others have suggested on this site to bring in things such as theme parks water parks zip lining indoor skydiving ropes courses monorail transit unfortunately these suggestions are often shut down for a myriad of reasons. Why are some folks... more »

Rail over the Rail

Is it possible to build a monorail over the existing railroad? The Railroad goes past some main places in town. Would the railroad be willing to elevate a passenger train? You could park at a station on south parkway and travel to the shopping areas along the way and get off at the medical district. Have a north and south route. the east and west could be west past the space and rocket center and Bridgestreet and Research... more »

Monorail from MidCity to Bridgestreet

Would be a very good idea to have some sort of public transportation between MidCity Huntsville and Bridgestreet - both areas will be (and are) high traffic volume. This will reduce traffic as well as transport more people in a more efficient and timely way. Of course, the easiest option would be a frequent bus route - which of course would be a big help - but honestly, not many people are thrilled about riding the... more »

Activate an On-line "Near Miss" Reporting Tool 4 Traffic Reports

The on-line "Near Miss" Reporting tool has been developed by the Bicycle Advisory and Safety Committee (BASC) and has been beta tested. It is a tool for citizens to report unsafe traffic near misses, especially those with video evidence. Cyclists are riding with cameras now to document unsafe traffic incidents. The reported incidents collected by this tool can be mapped by GIS and used by HPD and Planning to address... more »

Construction zone pedestrian passageways

Here is an idea, when there is new construction or major renovation downtown (and I hope there is more of it) that requires building to the sidewalk and curb areas... require contractors to build pedestrian walkways... this is not an unreasonable requirement as almost every urban area that I've ever been in does not force pedestrian onto the street just because there is work being down. I mean really.

Schlitterbahn Cedar Fair consolidation

With today's sale of the Schlitterbahn water parks to the Cedar Fair Group up in Ohio, this might a great opportunity for Huntsville to proactively reach out to Cedar Fair to see if they would be willing to put in a " Dual Park" facility here in Huntsville. With Huntsville's expected growth in the coming years this would a great asset in tearms of corporate and individual recruitment. If we had this here locally, our... more »

Fix the Dug Hill/72 intersection

With today's deadly crash, the city needs to prioritize whatever they plan on doing to fix that intersection. Last I heard, there was no momentum to putting up a stop light, so they intend to make drivers turn right to enter traffic. They need to find a way to have a decel lane nearby if they intend to move forward with their "turn right to turn left" idea! Thank you

341 Overpass/Bypass Connecting Southwest and Northeast HSV

While 431 does get to south memorial, it would speed up traffic if there was an overpass or bypass that took traffic over the congested hospital area (obviously with the option to exit) and merge onto the parkway (options to go north and south) Additionally, it would be a pipe dream, but nice if near the mountain at 431 the highway split and you had the option to take the overpass to south memorial (talked about above)... more »

Public drinking fountains

I was reasonable impressed with all the renovation/restoration of Big Spring Park until today, when I noticed that the public drinking fountains had been removed? Why?? Drinking fountains aren't a luxury - they are essential for public safety, especially as the temperature climbs during spring and summer. And while the city is at it they should also provide public drinking fountains every mile or so along all the greenways... more »

We need a new local newspaper.

If you want to find out what is going on in Huntsville you will find very little in our local Huntsville, oops, Alabama newspaper. We need a newspaper that tells the people of our area about many of the Big Picture ideas as well as hundreds of events that happen every month in our fantastic part of our planet. The local TV stations do a pretty good job of doing this in the morning but not our Newspaper. The Athens newspaper... more »

Police Bicycle Patrols

Now here is an idea that will float like a lead balloon with city leaders, and police officers, Huntsville needs to put a bunch of our finest, police officers on bicycle patrols. If we seriously want to encourage safe bicycle ridership then having police on bikes accomplishes many goals. One, police officers become more empathetic with the cyclists and experience what cyclist face on many of our roads. Two, the police... more »
