I'm very passionate about Five Points and the downtown area. It has a lot of great things going for it already, and there are many projects that could make it an even more desirable area. My least favorite part of the area is that four gas stations were allowed to operate so close to the historic Five Points and Old Town areas (with even more gas stations nearby). It is a tremendous eye sore. I love local businesses like ...more »
I moved here a year ago and have been unsuccessful in finding Recreation Activities and Classes- I have concluded that the city does not sponsor any besides a few sports programs. I propose the current Parks and Recreation department to expand and create classes for kids and adults to include the current sports offerings in addition to courses like community foreign language classes, performing arts, health and wellness, ...more »
Why does Madison County not have a community health plan? With our state ranking in the top 5 for all STDS and also athe such a great risk for tornadoes, this should be a priority.
A Huntsville Jazz Choir!
With all the talented folks in our area this may be a great opportunity for entertaining, socializing and community outreach. Seems the craft beer folks could be a starting venue.
See this idea:
Use the campus of Grissom High as the starting point for a new community center. With the library already moving there, and the auditorium begging for community theater, the basics are already in place. Base other Huntsville community-type initiatives from there (i.e. meet at Grissom for 'Walk with the Doc'). Lay out a running route of various distances. Get community volunteers to come teach short classes on photography, ...more »
Huntsville needs to utilize its great local artist base to integrate locally-themed sculptures, mosaics, fountains, murals, etc. into the new downtown developments. Otherwise, as places they will just be newly designed strip malls, only as endearing a landmark as the novelty that will wear out before they are paid for. Great cities have great art that serves as landmarks (not generic landmarks like, Publix or the latest ...more »
What do we love in the South? College Football!! Why not integrate this into the many activities going on at Big Spring Park? I believe this could be a great community event. We could do a setup similar to the Movies In The Park on a big screen for night games, have food trucks, and (if permitted by the city) beverages for sale by local craft beer breweries such as Straight To Ale, Brew Stooges, etc. It would be ...more »
The Goldsmith Schiffman stadium is no longer regularly used since Lee built their new fields. The acreage/surrounding neighborhood is used to occasional events and parking is sufficient for a Velodrome.
Possibly a cool semi-permanent dome structure to protect the wood floor. Could also be used for Roller Derby as well as be a multi - purpose community building.
Build a new Drive-in in Huntsville. One of the areas in Huntsville could be re-purposed as a Drive-in Theater. there is not one of these within an hour of here and it could be a big draw. A place on the river or near Ditto Landing might be a good location, or near the new dog park also.
