Currently you have to drive to Birmingham to take the train. A spur that serves Huntsville and Nashville would make it easier for people here to visit other southeastern cities and vice versa -- and might spur price competition between the airport and rail service. It's only $39 to ride between Atlanta and Birmingham round trip.
While internet users in the US struggle with expensive and slow connections provided by cable corporations, Chattanooga, Tennessee's fiber-optic network, "The Gig", is a taxpayer-owned public utility that boasts internet speeds 50 times faster than the rest of the country. The overhead utility lines along main routes take a lot away from just how pretty Huntsville really is, especially for newcomers.
Relocating these underground for future development and phasing out/moving older lines over time by burying them will help beautify Huntsville tremendously (just sayin')
I've said it before, but it is worth repeating, the argument for why Huntsville needs high-speed fiber access to the internet is all but won, the question is how are we going to work at getting it. I live 1/2 mile from the Aldridge Creek Greenway and love it. The walking and bike path is a fantastic resource for exercise and transportation. My only lament is the lack of destinations available and connections. Extending the creek trail all the way to the Target shopping center should be a quick solution to the connections problem.
Ease and efficiency of transportation is key for any city to grow and fluorish. A Downtown movie theatre would be a great draw for Huntsville. Even a small theatre would encourage foot traffic and "date/family nights" in the heart of the city. As a bonus, design the theatre to have an "old time" look and feel (at least on the exterior.) Retro is the new cool. So, maybe make it a throw-back to the classic theatres that once existed here? Let's cover some of our parking lots with solar panel roofs. It would provide shelter for the cars to park under and would be a space saving way to create solar-generated power. Also, solar power enhances Huntsville's progressive, forward-thinking image.
Before moving to Huntsville, I lived in another mid-sized city with an extensive bike trail network leading to the heart of downtown and spreading out to surrounding suburbs and county areas. It was AMAZING. The paths allowed for people to bike, walk or scoot all over the city and surrounding populous areas. There is an artificial beach across the river from Triana that is hugely popular. If we had a beach on the river in Huntsville it would be HUGELY popular. How can we be given such a great God given gift like the Tennessee River and do so little with it? Get a light rail, most major metros that are serious about being green have one. Servicing the airport, Bridge Street, SE Huntsville.
People walk on them. They are made of concrete and many Huntsville streets don't have them. How about we build som before we start building skyscrapers and mass transit. No one in the California street neighborhoods can walk to the brand new publix, or any of the new stuff in the medical district. The first sight visitors see coming off of I-565 onto the Parkway are billboards, signs and power lines. There's nothing inviting about it. Beautify Huntsville by removing or changing the signs. Through effective planning and landscaping, this change could be a major enhancement and draw to the city. Planned cities throughout the U.S. might offer insight into how to go about effectively making changes.
I would like to see developers and property management companies for retail properties be required to connect their parking lots with one another. This would help ease congestion on heavily traveled routes like University and along Memorial Parkway. our family has owned boats for 30 years. Ditto is in desperate need of 1) additional revenue 2) a place to purchase food and drink 3) additional dry storage and 4) outdoor venue for events like concerts in the park, etc.
it is a beautiful, beautiful place that is significantly underutilized because there's nothing there. If you aren't a boater or a fisherman, there's currently nothing there for you!
I like going downtown and all the events going on now. It would be nice if all the public parking garages in downtown Huntsville also include nice public restrooms. In general, parking downtown is pretty cheap. So, you could probably add just a little bit to the parking fee to pay for their installation and upkeep.
Monte Sano is an excellent climb for cyclists, and having a bike lane would make it even better! The blind curves and drainage ditch causes traffic to build up and nervous riders. The current traffic lanes are wide, so narrowing each one by 2' would allow a 4' bike lane for cyclists to climb the beautiful roadway and keep traffic flowing!

Sao Paulo, Brazil has a very unique area in the city known for it's "open-air museum" of street art graffiti paintings. I don't mean your typical "tagging" that usually peppers trains or buildings but full blown art pieces (think mural) by skilled artist. I like everything about Monte Sano, the park, the trees, trails, art show, dog shows, the winter weather and the cool summers.
Ditto Landing could possibly do very well with a restaurant overlooking the river. The city is great, but people also like nature and with a restaurant being by the river a person can have both-Nature and the City. There is a restaurant in Guntersville called Top of the River and the place is packed whenever we go there. A state of the art electric bus, using in-pavement induction charging that connected UAH to Bridge Street, Cumings Research Park to the west and Downtown Huntsville to the east. The potential for the development of student villages and other transit oriented development would boost economic development. The corridor should be mixed mode and people scaled, walkable and dynamic
When we want to improve automobile traffic, we design a better roadway system. When we want to accommodate pedestrians, we install a pedestrian-friendly sidewalk system. So if we REALLY want to be a bike friendly community, we should plan and implement a network of connecting bike trails.
