How about events on the Green Ways? ie Art festivals, etc. It would be a good way to get people out on the Green Ways and make a day out of it. Trunk sales, etc...
Instead of kids working at McDonalds etc, how about kids on Sports teams like Soccer work referring Soccer for AYSO and other City sport programs. AYSO is real big on volunteers of parents but with single parents and work schedules it hard to do that at times but I am sure there are those out there that would pay a fee to fund High School players to referee games. It would be good for the students since it gives them ...more »
In Japan and other countries they have vegetable gardens maintained by students that the produce is used in the school cafeterias. Considering how many schools HSV has it could be coordinated that each school do one type of vegetable ie Tomatoes at several schools, Cucumbers at several, etc. Someone with food service could determine what could be used and then schools could be assigned to grow specific crops. This could ...more »
It would be nice to see Bus stop shelters for the transit system instead of people standing out by the road with no where to get out of the weather or sit down. All that would be required would be an overhead cover with a bench. Make it as vandal proof as possible avoiding glass etc..
Huntsville being such a technology oriented city should have Gigabit internet access like Chattanooga and other cities in the US. Huntsville has companies such as ADTRAN that develop and build the components for that infrastructure. Huntsville Utilities could venture in that direction, Chattanooga's electric company's smart grid converstion led to their Gigabit speeds. It seems only natural that since Huntsville has ...more »
When we lived in Charlotte they had a yearly event there called the Taste of Charlotte where local restaurants would set up stands downtown and people could buy tokens to sample their food. They would prepare their signature dishes etc and make them available for certain amounts of tokens. This would allow people to sample the foods of alot of restraunts and it was a very popular event every summer downtown. It was a ...more »
The edging around Big Spring park is looking pretty bad. The old stone walls along the edge of the lake are crumbling. It would be good if the lake would get a retrofit similar to what you have on the West side with the sidewalk next to the edge. This would create new walkways and also repair the walls. The lake itself might benefit by draining and cleaning and or deepening certain parts. Maybee adding an island for the ...more »
Move the Electrical Substation from Downtown to Corner of Governors & Parkway. You could make it nice looking by encorporating some type of art walls around it shielding it from the parkway and governors. The high power lines that service it currently pass directly by that corner which would allow for hookup easily. This would utilize a space that most likely will never be used for anything else and free up the area across ...more »
Set aside space and build elevated public garden spaces in city parks throughout the city for residents to rent out space to garden. Alot of people love to garden but dont have suitable space to do so in their yards. The city could construct standard sized raised plots that have controlled access so people could grow tomatoes, cuccumbers, and other vegatables. The spaces could be leased out for a season for like a nominal ...more »
Fill in the upper lagoon of Braham Springs since it is pretty nasty looking anyway with all those old building foundations in the water etc. Overall that area looks pretty bad. If you filled it in, you could put in a waterpark with water slides and other water themed typed things ie Large Lazy river that would circle the entire park not unlike they do at Disney at Typhon Lagoon. There could be a zero entrance pool, not ...more »
When I was growing up in Huntsville in the late 70's-mid 80's Parks and Playgrounds would send out a games trailer to neighborhoods during the summer. They would park it at a dead end street or at a city park and staff it so kids could come and play games etc. They would have contests, you could win T-shirts etc. It was a community engagement thing. We didn't have a local park near my house so it was great for the kids. ...more »
I was walking down the Aldridge Creek Greenway today and was thinking how nice it would be to have some type of festival or community event along the greenway. Certain areas of the Green Way could be designated for this. There could be art festivals with booths lining the greenway on the sides. There could be community involvement events where local groups could set up booths to display what they have to offer people ...more »
