I have had several requests from friends regarding the recent renovation of Big Spring Park downtown. All of them want the islands put back into the park, for a variety of reasons. It gives the birds a home, where they can be safe away from human populations when they want. Also, it makes the park more interesting, beautiful, and enjoyable.
This weekend, a friend of mine had a life threatening experience. While driving late downtown, a group of strangers suddenly got into her car and expected her to take them for a ride. She thought she was getting robbed! It turns out they were Uber customers who simply got in the wrong car. This is becoming more common in cities across America, and making scary news stories everywhere. The root cause is that most rideshare ...more »
How many times have you gone to a local apartment complex, especially after dark, and found yourself in a maze with no guidance of your destination? Bonnell Drive is a perfect example that comes to mind. Houses and businesses sometimes have this issue too. Huntsville relies a lot on transient folks, those who live here under a decade, and then move onto another job elsewhere as needed. And those folks tend to live in ...more »
Airport Road no longer has an airport on it. This causes confusion whenever new people visit or move into our town. I propose holding some sort of vote or contest to come up with a better name for it. Hopefully we don't name it after yet another politician.
Downtown Huntsville, like most downtown areas, has a traffic and parking problem. I have a solution that has worked elsewhere: Make downtown a pedestrian zone. I'm not talking about banning all traffic / parking from downtown, but a partial solution. Here's how this could work. Let's create designated parking areas around the border of downtown, and create a shuttle that takes people around various locations downtown. ...more »
The existing shuttle bus public transit routes are pretty good, but the system could use improvement. There is a bus route within walking distance from just about any point in the city. Each route goes by at least one grocery store and other shopping and business opportunities, so people of the city can meet their needs effectively. Here are my recommendations, in order of implementation. Each improvement should help ...more »
Huntsville is truly blessed by being near a major scenic river, the Tennessee River. There has been a lot of discussion on LinkedIn lately on bringing a riverboat cruise to our city. This could also tie us closer with our neighbor cities along the river. As an added option, this boat could carry a casino. A lot of cities have casinos nearby that exist legally because they are in the water. Many people in Huntsville ...more »
I like the idea of bringing a Brazilian or South American style restaurant to Huntsville. We have food from just about every continent, except South America is not represented very well. These are gaining in popularity everywhere, even cruise vacation ships. One special service is that the waiters bring fresh marinated roasted meat skewers right to your table.
I'm all for bringing an Amtrak route to Huntsville, but it requires co-operation of other nearby communities, which may fall through. If we cannot get an Amtrak train route to go through Huntsville, a good alternative might be MegaBus. This bus service is gaining in popularity, and we already have a bus stop downtown. Megabus is more comfortable than Greyhound, has low cost rates similar to Amtrak and Greyhound, and ...more »
Every important city has them, and they often contribute to the beautiful skyline. A proposal was put forth in recent years to have a 27 story apartment building in downtown Huntsville. Although it was defeated, more proposals are likely to follow. These can contain apartment homes, businesses, shopping, government offices, and so on. I think that if we have any skyscrapers downtown, the base floors must support plenty ...more »
